Why Ewan McGregor Had to Rerecord His Beauty and the Beast Song
"I hadn't been in a recording studio for a long time, and I was in a recording studio in London when we recorded the song for the first time. There was an enormous amount of pressure, I thought," he recalled. "I had only just arrived, I was jet lagged from LA. I got off a plane one day and the next day I was in a recording studio. It's very nerve-wracking recording, because you're in a quiet room and through the glass there's people who are looking at you, and they speak to each other and you can't hear them. In this instance there were 50 people in there, and I was standing jet lagged alone trying to sing in a French accent this big number. Every time I stopped they would go, 'OK, hang on,' [and talk amongst themselves]. I became terribly scared they were going, 'What the f--k are we going to do with him?'Read the full article from IGN here.
"We did it, it was fine, and then I asked Bill, I said, 'Look, when we're working on the dialogue next time, can I have another shot at it?'" McGregor continued. "So we went just privately, me and him and a few people in New York, and we recorded it a second time."
"I was in very good hands with Bill Condon, the director. I didn't think very much about it -- I just did it," McGregor said. "Partly that was interesting because I had to do a French accent, and I've been married to a French woman for 22 years, and my house is full of French every day. My kids all speak French to their mother, and I found it very difficult to do. I rather arrogantly thought I'd just be able to do this French accent without very much work, and when I tried to do it, I didn't do it very well. Also Disney wanted the full French sound, they didn't want the 'r' sound, so when you put an 'r' in a French accent it turns Spanish or Mexican, so that was an issue. I came back to it afterwards and rerecorded the whole thing again with Bill Condon in a studio, so we had two shots of it and we improved it. By that time, I'd got a handle on my French accent."

Ian McKellen shares seating chart from the 'Beauty and the Beast' table read
By now you have watched, re-watched, and examined the new Beauty and the Beast live action sneak peek enough to teach a semester-long course on the less than minute long video. The clip was amazing for a number of reasons, but at the top of the list was getting to see just a glimpse of the table read that took place last April in London.
Our first look at the cast was actually a photo shared by Josh Gad (Le Fou) from that fateful April day and the actor also spoke about the event with IGN last August (see the full interview here).
La Bella y le Bestia de Disney also put together a great piece identifying the cast and their enchanted counterparts.

It was unlike anything I've ever been a part of before because it was just so epic. You almost felt like all it was missing was an audience of 7,000 because it was just full on. Usually a table read is a very intimate affair; you're all sitting there with your scripts and engaging by virtue of hearing it out loud, that's where it ends. This, we were seeing full performances done, we were seeing full pre-visualization of some of these incredibly complex scenes. It was unlike anything I've ever been a part of and probably will ever be a part of. It was just full on.However, no one has come close to igniting fans' excitement quite like Ian McKellen (Cogsworth). In a post shared on Facebook (and now his own website), McKellen described the atmosphere of the room where the cast, director, crew, producers, and executives gathered to once more begin telling a tale as old as time.
Today Beauty and her Beast (Emma Watson and Dan Stevens) read with their supporting cast: and a happy reunion it was for me, next to Mr Holmes' "Lady in Grey" (Hattie Morahan) along from Bard the Bowman (Luke Evans) and Kevin Kline, who I haven't seen since we received our Tony Awards together in 1981. The cast were seated 'round four long trestle tables placed in a square. In the middle on their own little stage there was a large clock and a feather duster and a candelabra, who all remained static throughout the morning. Elsewhere, everything and everyone was alive and even kicking, high-kicking too. Bill Condon had decided to put on a show and I've never seen or heard anything like it.With the release of the clip from the table read, McKellen revisited his words from last April and also shared a seating chart from the table read. Most of the cast in attendance are easy to identify in the clip, but the chart reveals a number of other members of the film's creative team. On one side of the table you can find composer Alan Menken and lyricist Tim Rice alongside costume designer Jacqueline Durran and many others. And just on the edge of the frame, you can make out director Bill Condon.

Countdown to 'Beauty and the Beast' #4
Magical Monday- Enchanted Tales with Belle at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom
"Take me back to the day Belle and Beast fell in love!" If you are a fan of Beauty and the Beast, then New Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom park is probably at the top of your Disney wish list. From the Be Our Guest restaurant to Gaston's Tavern, the area of Belle's Village is an immersive experience for any Disney guest. Also located in the village is Enchanted Tales with Belle, where guests can visit Maurice's cottage and travel through a magic mirror to the Beast's castle. The interactive show, which officially opened on December 6, 2012, allows kids and adults to take part in a retelling of Belle and Beast's story narrated by Lumiere and complete with an appearance by Belle herself. Although the attraction itself is entertaining, you will not begrudge some of the wait time, if only to have the chance to explore Maurice's cottage. Here you can see several nods to the animated classic, as well as some charming new touches to Belle's story. One of my favorites is the painting of Belle and her mother hanging in the living room. I also love the wood carving of Belle and Beast tucked away on a high shelf in Maurice's workshop, which is actually a small scale model for the large music box in the Rose Gallery room of the Be Our Guest restaurant.

Ian McKellen has seen 'Beauty and the Beast' and "it's absolute magic"
While we have to wait until March 2017 to see Beauty and the Beast brought to life on screen, Ian McKellen, who plays Cogsworth in the film, is ahead of the curve. McKellen revealed on the Today Show he recently saw the first screening of the film, calling it "absolute magic."

Ian McKellen discusses 'Beauty and the Beast' ending
In a new interview with Collider, Ian McKellen discusses his role as Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast, including one of the film's final scenes.

Ian McKellen also spoke with SFGate about his experience on set and working with Bill Condon for the first time since 1998's Gods and Monsters.
McKellen appeared on Live! with Kelly and Michael earlier this week to promote Mr. Holmes and also discussed his time on the set of Beauty and the Beast, mentioning fellow cast members Audra McDonald, Stanley Tucci, and Emma Watson (at the 23:54 mark).

Speaking of Bill and also fantasy, you are working with him again in Beauty And The Beast, I wanted to ask, are you doing motion capture for that? Because you’re playing a clock…It looks like the live-action feature will end in a similar fashion to the animated film, but I am very curious about McKellen's mention of Cogsworth's wife. Who could it be?
McKELLEN: Unfortunately not, no. They’re using a variety of techniques, but the Cogsworth Clock, that has all been choreographed without me. I’ve added my voice to the picture, and the other way around, and then there is a big scene at the end where everybody comes back to life, and the prince is restored and I go back to being the majordomo and my wife appears and we dance together. So that was my big contribution to the film: being in the big dance scene. So, no. I wanted to be the clock, but I couldn’t. But my voice will be heard! And my face will eventually be seen!

“We’re friends and we had a success a long time ago with ‘Gods and Monsters’ and we’ve stayed friends since then,” he says of Condon. “We’d always hoped to do another film together, and this one fit the bill. Everyone’s different, but I particularly like the mood on his sets. I just did three or four days on his Disney film of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and it was the same way. There were 150 people on that set the day I was there, but it was very relaxed, and that all comes from the director.”

Ian McKellen: "It just tickled my fancy."
With Mr. Holmes making its limited US debut this Friday, Ian McKellen is once again making his rounds with press to discuss the film stateside. In addition to talk about the latest Sherlock Holmes film, McKellen also spoke with USA Today about his role in Beauty and the Beast as Cogsworth.

Quite literally, as a matter of fact, given that he plays Cogsworth, a clock, in Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast retelling, slated for a 2017 release.
"Why the hell am I doing it? It just tickled my fancy," McKellen says. "To be in a Disney musical at 76, it's good, isn't it? It means you're still functioning."

Ian McKellen talks 'Beauty and the Beast'
Ian McKellen, who has been busy promoting his new film Mr. Holmes, which is also directed by Bill Condon, once again discussed his upcoming role as Cogsworth in a pair of new interviews. Speaking with the Irish Examiner, McKellen described the butler turned clock as a "fantastic character" and spoke about the film's approach to the enchanted objects and Dan Steven's Beast.

“The cheek of it made me want to do it,” he says. “They had written this fantastic character. He is a butler that gets turned into a clock. It is based on the Disney animation, although here animation is used for the characters that the prince sees when he is under the spell.”
The prince-cum-beast, played by Dan Stevens, won’t be animated. “He will be a monster, a beast. Basically, I just have had to supply a voice and the animators will do the rest. Then, at the end of the film, the characters all turn back into their real selves and then I sing and dance in a Disney movie.”The second interview is a segment of the June 12th episode of The Empire Film Podcast. McKellen briefly discusses Beauty and the Beast at a few points, beginning at the 51:03 mark (then again at 53:33, 56:12, and finally at 57:35).

"Meet the Actor" with Ian McKellen now available on iTunes
Ian McKellen recently appeared at the Regent Street Apple Store in London to take part in the "Meet the Actor" series and discuss his role in Mr. Holmes. While the event mostly focused on the upcoming Sherlock Holmes film, McKellen also discussed reuniting with director Bill Condon, Lord of the Rings, Shakespeare, and Beauty and the Beast.The discussion about Beauty and the Beast begins around the 13:00 mark and the actor even breaks out into song with "Be Our Guest" and "Beauty and the Beast." In addition to McKellen serenading the audience, he also talks about singing with Ewan McGregor (Lumiere) and Emma Thompson, who, according to McKellen, plays a teapot "very convincingly" and has "a beautiful voice." He also briefly mentions Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, and Audra McDonald before the conversation turns back to Mr. Holmes.

Ian McKellen: "It's terribly exciting!"
With Mr. Holmes coming to theaters this summer, star Ian McKellen has begun promotion for the film and naturally his next collaboration with the director made it into the conversation. In a recent interview with BBC Radio 2, McKellen briefly discussed his role as Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast. "I play a clock. And my name is Cogsworth. And I get to sing. I'm sorry I'm not allowed to tell you what I sing. It's terribly exciting!"Beauty and the Beast marks McKellen's third collaboration with director Bill Condon. The pair previously worked together on Gods and Monsters and Mr. Holmes. Disney's Beauty and the Beast, which is currently filming in London, is set for release on March 17, 2017.
