New images of Belle, Beast, Gaston & more

This week's Entertainment Weekly includes a preview of Beauty and the Beast and four new images have already debuted online.

The site also shared a new behind the scenes photo of Emma Watson (Belle) with director Bill Condon and music supervisor Matt Sullivan.

New stills of Belle, Beast & Gaston from Total Film magazine

Earlier this week, Emma Watson debuted the upcoming Beauty and the Beast cover of Total Film magazine (available January 17th) and today we have our first look inside the issue with four new stills from the film.

"The animated movie came out when I was a kid," he says. "It was really great. I think every generation has its own telling of this. It captures a lot of imaginations at once. It certainly captured mine." - Dan Stevens (Beast)

"We didn’t tone [Gaston] down. I think we did the opposite. Everything he does, he does extreme. There was no point trying to find a way to tone it down." -Luke Evans (Gaston)

Dan Stevens on the Beast's VFX: “It’s never been used for a romantic lead before.”

Beauty and the Beast is one of the most anticipated films of 2017 and USA Today has a new look at one of the story's most iconic scenes.

Dan Stevens (Beast) also spoke with USA Today about the film's VFX process and taking on the role of the Beast.

The latest incarnation of the “tale as old as time” pairs Emma Watson as the fair Belle and Dan Stevens as the furry and intimidating yet ultimately lovable Beast, created through a two-step CGI process. First Stevens did his motion-capture work “in a giant muscle suit on stilts in a Lycra onesie,” he says, and would do the facial performance separately. “It’s never been used for a romantic lead before.” As for the acting, he enjoyed the thoughts Watson brought to the project of Belle and the Beast being a yin and yang of different energies, like two halves of a whole. “Getting to play this big, quite silly character at times who’s incredibly misanthropic, but at the same time having this incredibly bright woman opposite me firing these ideas around, fascinated me,” Stevens says. “That story has existed on millions of bookshelves and being part of that bedtime-story moment can be really magical.”

New promotional images of Belle have surfaced online over the last few days. Alternate versions of the images have previously appeared on newly released Beauty and the Beast toys and books.

What a start to the morning! Empire Magazine has debuted a new image of Belle (Emma Watson) and Gaston (Luke Evans) in their provincial town.

"He gets as dark as any Disney character could possibly get", says Gaston himself, Luke Evans. The character, while still comic relief, is also an ex-soldier – there are, according to Evans, several shades to him. "This is a man who, for the first time in his life, hasn't got what he wanted."

Leading lady Emma Watson, meanwhile, seem to have got everything she wanted, having been a Beauty And The Beast superfan as a nipper. "Belle was one of my idols growing up," she tells us. "I knew every word to the animation. I was born in Paris like Belle. We both love books, obviously. She is someone who doesn't really feel like she fits in, but she finds her place in the world and uses what makes her different. She was just inspiring to me."

We may have already had a small look at this scene, although from a bit of a distance, during the behind the scenes featurette that was included on the 25th anniversary Blu-ray release of Beauty and the Beast.

Emma Watson: "We made Belle an inventor"

One of the newly released images from Beauty and the Beast gave us our first look at Kevin Kline as Maurice, as well as a bit of insight into Belle's relationship with her father.

Emma Watson spoke with Entertainment Weekly about expanding Belle's backstory and why she has so much time to read.

“In the animated movie, it’s her father who is the inventor, and we actually co-opted that for Belle,” says Watson. “I was like, ‘Well, there was never very much information or detail at the beginning of the story as to why Belle didn’t fit in, other than she liked books. Also what is she doing with her time?’ So, we created a backstory for her, which was that she had invented a kind of washing machine, so that, instead of doing laundry, she could sit and use that time to read instead. So, yeah, we made Belle an inventor.”

According to set decorator Katie Spencer, Maurice, who is troubled by the loss of Belle's mother, spends his time crafting music boxes for his daughter in addition to being an inventor.

“Kevin Kline as Maurice, is making all these music boxes that have to tell the story of Belle not traveling,” says the film’s set decorator, Katie Spencer. “She’s overprotected in a way, by her father, because she’s lost her mother. So, we’ve made all these music boxes that represent different countries of the world, so she can see what she’s missing.”

New images of Belle, Beast, Gaston & more

Are you sitting down? No? Well, you might want to before taking a peek at eight new images from Beauty and the Beast. The new images are courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, which will also feature Belle and Beast on the cover of this week's issue.

Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Emma Watson who really, really, really loved Disney’s 1991 animated classic, Beauty and the Beast. “I can’t even think how many times I watched it as a child,” says the former Harry Potter star. “I knew all the words by heart. I knew all the songs by heart.”  

For this week’s cover story, EW visited the film’s U.K. set and spoke with all of the above, as well as director Bill Condon and costume designer Jacqueline Durran, who talked about creating the new version of the iconic yellow dress Belle wears in the original film’s ballroom scene. In addition, we chatted with Ewan McGregor, who voices the enchanted, “Be Our Guest”-performing candelabra Lumière, and Sir Ian McKellen, who plays the clock Cogsworth and was apparently desperate to get his own big production number. “I kept singing what I thought would be a rather good addition to the score,” says the X-Men franchise star. “‘My name is Cogsworth!/ And I’m a clock!/Ticktock!’ But I didn’t get my own song.”
