'Beauty and the Beast' 25th Anniversary Round-Up (Part Two)

Beauty and the Beast made its debut at the New York Film Festival on September 29, 1991 with a work-in-progress version of the film, which was met with a ten minute standing ovation as the film reached its happy ending. Beauty and the Beast made it theatrical debut a few months later on November 22, 1991 and over the last twenty-five years, Disney's animated classic broke box-office records, received a historic "Best Picture" Academy Award nomination, inspired a Broadway musical, nestled into a corner of the Magic Kingdom, and will soon make its way back to the big screen as a live-action film.

Disney has celebrated Beauty and the Beast's 25th anniversary over the past several months with screenings around the country, a D23 Fanniversary, complete with new interviews, and a new Blu-ray release with all new content. 'Beauty and the Beast' returns to the Lincoln Center for 25th anniversary

On September 29, 1991, just a few months before Beauty and the Beast's November theatrical release, a work-in-progress version of the film was screened at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall during the New York Film Festival. The film, which featured storyboard art and pencil tests, as well as completed animation, received a ten minute standing ovation during the event. Alice Tully Hall once again celebrated Disney's animated classic with a special 25th anniversary screening complete with an appearance from the original cast. Those in attendance were also treated to a performance of "Beauty and the Beast" from Angela Lansbury (Mrs. Potts) and composer Alan Menken. It's hard to believe Beauty and the Beast is celebrating its 25th anniversary, but it is wonderful to see Paige O'Hara, the original voice of Belle, still talk about the film and character with so much enthusiasm. O'Hara recently sat down with Yahoo! Movies for a live chat to discuss the landmark animated film. During the chat, O'Hara discusses her audition process for the iconic role, recording with Robby Benson (Beast), her favorite song, and when she knew the film was going to be a "classic."

When asked about the live-action Beauty and the Beast and Emma Watson as Belle (jump to 14:30), O'Hara had nothing but high praise ("She is perfect casting!"), adding that producer Don Hahn has spoken highly about the film to her.

Director Bill Condon: "I was so excited to hear that Disney was thinking about doing a live-action version of Beauty and the Beast. When something is so perfect, why get near it? The answer is technology has caught up to the ideas that were introduced in that movie."

Menken & Friends: 25 Years of Musical Inspiration

Perhaps no film of its era had a larger impact on animated movies than Beauty did. That film — along with its 1989 predecessor The Little ­Mermaid — resurrected Disney animation, introduced the “princess movie” to a new generation, and revived the musical as an art form. In fact, if it hadn’t been for Beauty, there might never have been a Frozen or a Hamilton. “So many musicals have tried to chase that formula — the sidekicks, the bad guys,” Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda says. “But Beauty and the Beast did it at its pinnacle. It’s the best it’s ever been done.”

Paige O'Hara: "Other than my voice, I think that I brought a sense of humor, certainly physically. The quirky, funny faces and stuff I would make.

And while Nielsen’s image of Belle bandaging the Beast didn’t directly inspire the similar moment in the 1991 movie, Hahn says that both the painting and the sequence in the film speak to what’s so powerful about this particular turning point: “It’s the image of two people at opposite sides of the spectrum finally coming to the singular moment where their lives are going to be changed by each other, and they didn’t see it coming.”

Hahn promises the sequence will be just as memorable in Bill Condon’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, which stars Emma Watson and Dan Stevens and will hit theaters on March 17, 2017. “I didn’t talk to Bill about Nielsen’s piece, but the moment in the film is exquisite. Bill crafted something that’s wonderfully caring, romantic and beautiful at the same time,” said Hahn. “It’s the kind of moment that filmmakers dream of, and it inspired Kay Nielsen, us, and now Bill.”

Paige O'Hara reveals what she is most excited to see in the live-action film

The ballroom scene. "Be Our Guest." Beast giving Belle the library. Beauty and the Beast is filled with so many memorable and beloved scenes that it is sometimes difficult to decide what I am most excited to see brought to life in the live-action film (I want them all!). Paige O'Hara, the original voice of Belle, does not seem to have that problem as she revealed to Buzzfeed that she is particularly excited to see "Something There" in the new film.

“In [the original] movie it was in the snow scene of ‘Something There’ that we made a specific choice that it hits Belle: She’s really falling in love with [the Beast]. I want to see Emma’s moment when she realizes she’s fallen in love. That will be so exciting.”

O'Hara also spoke highly of Emma Watson taking on the role of Belle.

“If I were producing the film, I would have cast her. I think she’s absolutely perfect for the role. She’s got the outward beauty, but she’s also got an inward beauty about her, and an old soul. Through mutual people we’ve sent messages, and I just basically was wishing her all the best and to have a wonderful time.”

The Academy hosted a 25th anniversary screening of Beauty and the Beast last night, complete with a panel beforehand with the original cast and creative team of the animated classic. Six videos from the event are now available to view, discussing a few of the film's main characters (Belle, Beast, Gaston, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts), as well as how the creative team came together and the beloved ballroom sequence.

Paige O'Hara to Emma Watson: "I just said to have a great time."

The Academy hosted a 25th anniversary screening of Beauty and the Beast on Monday night, which was preceded by a conversation with the original voice cast and creative team. During the event, Paige O'Hara, the voice of Belle, revealed she reached out to Emma Watson, who will be playing Belle in the live-action film.

Paige O'Hara, who voices Belle, could not be more pleased with the casting of Emma Watson as the live-action leading lady. In fact, unlike the rest the original voice cast, she has corresponded with the actress playing her character. "I sent messages to her, and I got some back," O'Hara said. "I just said to have a great time."

In addition to this beauty of an insight, USA Today shared a few more highlights from the night's celebration.

Beast was never given a "Prince" name.

Online, the post-change Beast has been called "Prince Adam." However, director Gary Trousdale said that's never what he called the character. "We didn't name him, because he was a beast for 98% of the movie," he told USA TODAY. "It didn't even occur to us until we were animating the Prince, and we were like 'we don't know what his name is.'" In fact, Trousdale was surprised to read of the "Adam" name, himself, on IMDb. "I think he was named Prince Adam in one of the direct-to-video sequels," he said.

The actor behind Gaston contends the character's still alive.

Richard White, who voices Gaston, thinks there's a good chance the muscly bad guy didn't die at the end of the movie. "Did you see a body? I never saw a body, and I'm waiting to find out" if he's is still alive, he said. Oh, and White doesn't see Gaston as a villain. "He's just misunderstood," he said, and then went into his character's signature cackle.

Animators obsessed over Gaston's chest hair.

Supervising animator on Gaston, Andreas Deja, said there was a contest among animators to design Gaston's chest hair that's exposed while the character sings the line "And every last inch of me's covered in hair." The first version at the body hair wasn't right: It looked as though it was combed. Deja said that working on Gaston-- his chest hair and all-- was a challenge, because Deja was told that the character "has to be handsome," but also evil.

'Beauty and the Beast' at the El Capitan Theatre Round-Up

It is sometimes hard to believe that we will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of Beauty and the Beast this November and some cannot wait for the festivities to begin! Last night, the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angelese held a special Throwback Thursday screening of the film, complete with an appearance from producer Don Hahn, video messages from Paige O'Hara (the voice of Belle) and composer Alan Menken, and even a surprise meet and greet with Belle herself.
